Saturday Covers #7

Take a fairly unknown Scottish indie band, then apply some grunge from Seattle, USA. You've got this week's Saturday Covers.

The Vaselines are what I like to call "pretty music." By this I mean nice little melodies, light sounding backing music, etc. They write very simple catchy songs, and sound like they don't have a care in the world. They're a good band to listen to if you just want to relax a bit.

Nirvana are not pretty music. By this I mean melodies of varying quality, heavy backing music, etc. Nirvana write simple, not so catchy songs, and sound like they hate everything in the world. They're a good band to listen to if you've lost all your other CDs.

Actually, I have nothing against Nirvana, but they're very overrated.

That done, let's concentrate on the covers. I like Nirvana's covers of Son Of A Gun and Molly's Lips. Apparently Kurt Cobain decided to drop his screaming/whining down the microphone act for these recordings. What he's doing can even be described as singing, an impressive feat for Nirvana. Yes, I know Cobain isn't shouting in all Nirvana songs, but you have to admit he's whining. Just a little.

Anyway, with these covers Nirvana have retained the catchiness of the original songs while adding a little something of their own (the fast, loud guitars). It's odd hearing a far more rocky interpretation of an indie song that manages to keep the melody as bouncy as ever. I like it. A big thumbs up for Nirvana, but not too big, because let's remember, they're overrated!
