A-ha sell out
Now, if you are someone that is anyone, and I'm assuming you are, you may have heard of a fantastic song by A-ha, called Take On Me. Yes, it's a soppy '80s pop song. I don't care. I like it.
BUT - possibly even better than the original, are my two hand-selected cover versions. Commence waffling.

First up is MxPx's version, from their '95 EP On The Cover. I feel a bit sorry for MxPx - they've never really had much commercial success, in mainstream or in the alternative charts. However, as far as covers go (and we all know that they're usually horrific), this is a good interpretation. Maybe the singing is a bit out of tune in places (how about 2:34!), but overall, very impressive.

Next, a blast of ska from Reel Big Fish. Even though they've pulled an MxPx with singer Aaron Barrett's tuning here or there, I think this is excellent. They've taken an originally slow song, very much aimed at pop charts, and turned it into a masterpiece. They've even included a subtle guitar solo at the end without showing it off too much. Great piece of music.
Next week, maybe Saturday Covers will be on a Saturday huh?

. I'd be happy to feature your band! Just write me a quick note saying what type of music you play, maybe a link to your website/MySpace, and include a link to a few downloadable songs if you can (submissions without samples are usually disregarded).

He has A Trombone XD
Fun fact:
"Take on me" is actually a grammatical error by Norwegians. In Norwegian, one way to say "Touch me" is "Ta på meg" which, if (mis)translated word-for-word, is "Take on me." For similar issues, see the Mark Twain story "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County."
I always thought the phrase "Take On Me" sounded a bit weird. I guess A-ha didn't mind though after it became such a massive hit!
Thanks for the comment and the fact.
